Exhibition Stand Design Generates Leads!
Designing successful exhibition stands is one of our most challenging, but enjoyable jobs. Creating visually impactful images, with easy to read messages, is an art in itself, but at KhooDesign we have the experience to do this.
The KhooCommerce exhibition stand at the eCommerce Expo 2026 needed to be so engaging that it stood out from its competitors, and encouraged the right demographic to visit. The design also had to take into consideration the sensory overload that exhibition visitors experience when they enter into the hall.
Designing for the Overload:
The eCommerce Expo is a vast hall filled with hundreds of stands, bright lights, competing screens, loud conversations, and a constant stream of people jostling for attention. Visitors are bombarded by visual noise, information, and people vying for their attention. It's sensory and cognitive overload on a massive scale.
That reality was the foundation on how we approached the exhibition stand design. When we created the stand for KhooCommerce at the eCommerce Expo 2026 in London (ExCeL, Stand K60), we treated the project less as pure graphic design and more as applied psychology under pressure. We needed to create something that was immediately recognisable, lowered mental engagement, and drew the right people in so that they lingered long enough for a conversation to take place.
The Cognitive Load Problem
Cognitive load theory explains why so many exhibition stands fail. Our working memory can only handle a limited amount of new information at once. At the eCommerce Expo visitors arrive with a high baseline load; they're tired, under pressure, exhausted by so many decisions to make, and find themselves scanning rather than reading.
When a stand presents too many messages, dense text, competing visuals, or unclear hierarchy, it just adds to the cognitive load. How do visitors respond? Well the brain disengages and they keep walking.
Visitors often decide within three to five seconds whether a stand is worth their time. So there's no time for decoding, if they have to decode what you do you've lost them! So our stand had to communicate its core value almost instantaneously, and then reward the visitor's decision to stop with something that feels easy and inviting.
Designing for Instant Clarity and Reduced Friction
For the KhooCommerce stand we started with prioritising what they do best. KhooCommerce has software that makes Amazon easy for Vendors and Sellers who have FBA (Fulfilled-By-Amazon). From streamlining the process, increasing profitability, and enabling forecasting KhooCommerce provides an invaluable service.
We knew that trying to list every feature on the stand would have been been poor design. Instead we focused on one clear, high-level promise that could be understood at a glance from the aisle, supported by clean visual hierarchy and generous negative space.
We kept messages short and benefit-oriented. Graphics were bold and high-contrast so they remained legible even when viewed at speed or from an angle. The layout guided the eye naturally toward conversation areas rather than creating barriers or dead ends. We ensured that teh spatial flow enabled wide, open approaches so that the stand felt safe and welcoming. Zones were kept distinct so visitors never felt overwhelmed by having to process everything at once. Staff positioning and body language were considered part of the design: approachable, not hovering.
The stand also had an element of fun associated with it. We knew that depicting a boat on the Amazon river, and asking a question would make people stop and laugh. This was the feedback from KhooCommerce, and when invited to share theirexperiences of navigating Amazon visitors vented their anger, and then had the opportunity to vent their frustration visually.
Multi-Sensory Attraction: The Amazon Forest Sounds
One of the most effective tools we used was not visual, but aural. We suggested introducing a sound effect of the ambient Amazon rainforest. Initially we thought that it added an element of intrigue, but we also knew that in a crowded exhibition hall the sound of a jaguar growling and monkeys screaming and chattering can reach people who are not even looking at the stand. We also wanted to depict the ambience of the Amazon, along with the creatures that can feel threatening.
We were told that this really resonated with some of KhooCommerce's visitors. People heard the sound and came over to chat about what it was. They were welcomed by the KhooCommerce team at a stand that had intriguing audio and clear, calm visual design. It was clear too that the stand had not been AI generated, but was different and welcoming. This helped the team to have some excellent conversations.
We were pleased with our design as it felt relevant to KhooCommerce's demographic, with clear messaging, and an element of fun thrown in. Introducing post-it pads with Amazon predators on each post-it note generated interaction and meaningful conversations with visitors.
Results and Reflection
The stand generated meaningful leads, exactly as intended. More importantly, the quality of conversations was high because visitors who stopped had already self-selected and arrived with reduced mental friction. They were not exhausted by decoding the space; they were ready to talk about their specific challenges, and signed up for demos with KhooCommerce!
Designing exhibition stands remains one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of our work at KhooDesign. It forces us to strip away everything non-essential, focus on human attention under pressure, and create clear messages. When those principles are applied thoughtfully—clear hierarchy, reduced extraneous load, thoughtful multi-sensory cues like the Amazon forest sounds—the stand stops competing for attention and starts working well for our client. In an environment such as this year's eCommerce Expo our stand design excelled itself.
